The Overground Railroad 

Just as the Underground Railroad once existed to enable those with the heart and opportunity to free themselves from the chains of bondage, the Overground Railroad is intended to be a vehicle of practical uplift for our African American communities.  The Overground Railroad intends to pool the social capital of our churches and voluntary civic organizations with the energy and entreprenurial spirit of our business sector to ensure the accountable economic development of our communities from the bottom up.

Just as the Underground Railroad enabled many to participate in large and small ways to the Freedom Movement of that day, today's Overground Railroad aims to assist us in finding ways  to liberate our people from want and powerlessness.

Overground Railroad aids businesses, educates consumers and the public, while supporting and enhancing the socially conscious missions of the African American church.

Our valued business members are the engineers of this generation’s Overground Railroad.  We believe that a vibrant and viable business sector is essential to the prosperity of our African American communities.  The viability of our business economy and our entire communities is enhanced when we ensure that dollars put into the hands of black consumers are recycled and reinvested within our communities.  Member businesses are entitled to an array of benefits including

The African American Church has and continues to play an indispensable leadership role in the lives of our communities.  

Our churches are the greatest reservoirs and generators of what has come to be called "social capital", the cooperative spirit that is the essence of community itself. The Overground Railroad aims to assist our churches in furthering their leadership role in the new century. We want to widen the circles in which the blessed spirits of mutual cooperation and social consciousness hold sway, and harness this spirit to the tasks of economic, social, moral and material uplift of our black communities.;
